Piles, also known as hemorrhoids, are swollen and inflamed veins in the rectum and anus that cause discomfort and bleeding. They can be internal, forming inside the rectum, or external, developing under the skin around the anus. Common symptoms include pain, itching, swelling, and rectal bleeding. Piles are often caused by increased pressure in the lower rectum due to straining during bowel movements, constipation, prolonged sitting, or pregnancy.

While mild cases may be treated with over-the-counter medications, lifestyle changes like a high-fiber diet and adequate hydration, severe cases might require medical procedures or surgery to remove or shrink the hemorrhoids. Hemorrhoids are a common condition and can occur in people of all ages, though they are more prevalent in older adults.
